Program & Events

This page includes the following information:

Youth

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are currently unable to offer in-person programming. Virtual programming and craft packets for children and teens are available. Check our Facebook page for more details.

  • Story Time: is scheduled throughout the year for children ages 3-6 and are held in the Story Room in the Children’s Section. Class sizes are limited, so pre-registration is encouraged. Schedules vary throughout the year, so check for current offerings.
  • Toddler Story Time: These sessions are offered for toddlers and an accompanying adult throughout the year. No pre-registration is required, but check with the library for current scheduling.
  • Summer Reading Program: Beginning the Tuesday after Memorial Day, youth are encouraged to join us for a summer of reading pleasure. Special programs are also offered throughout the summer. A calendar of summer events is available at the library beginning in mid-May.
  • "1000 books Before Kindergarten": Children are eligible from Birth to 5-year-old Kindergarten. Books can be read multiple times and do not all have to be from our library. Rewards are given for particular milestones. For more information download the rules here.
  • Other Programs: Special craft programs and other after-school programs are offered throughout the year, so check with the library, access our calendar or check on our Facebook page for details.

Teen

  • Our recently redecorated Young Adult section is located upstairs with a study area designed for you to gather and relax. It is easily identifiable by its yellow walls.
  • Grab an old or new favorite
  • Enjoy our graphic novel selection
  • Choose a new CD to enjoy
  • YA Crafts throughout the year

Adult

  • Adult programs are offered throughout the year, including programs sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council and special Christmas craft programs. Ask at the library, or check our calendar of events for upcoming events.
  • Book Sale: Each fall the Friends of Chanute Library sell donated or discarded books at great prices. This occurs on the last Saturday of each September.
  • eBooks:Through a partnership with the Kansas State Library , downloadable eBooks and audio-books that you can put on your portable device and enjoy anywhere. Using your library card, books are checked out for 7, 14 or 21 days. Once a book is due, it simply disappears from your device. However, just like a physical book we only have a certain number of copies of most digital titles. If a book is currently checked out, you may place a hold on the item.
You don't need to have a portable e-reader to take advantage of the service. EBooks and audio-books can also be read on a personal computer. In fact, some portable devices require that you first download a title to a computer and then transfer it to the device.
To access the Kansas “EZ Library” you will need:
    • A valid state library card. This is different than your Chanute Public Library card.
    • Access to the Internet.
    • The free software for the device or computer on which you wish to use your EZ Library items.
    • A valid email address so you can be notified when your titles are available for download.
For help and to start browsing the selection of titles, go to the Kansas EZ Library website.

  • Reference Service: Staff is available to help you answer your questions or assist you in finding information for research. We also provide access to several research databases.
  • Memorial/Gift Program: You can purchase materials for the library’s collection to commemorate a birthday, anniversary, to honor a friends or a family member, or simply to give a lasting gift to the community. Book plates with the honoree’s name will be included in each book.
  • Book Clubs: There are two book clubs currently associated with the Chanute Public Library. Please ask at the Adult Circulation desk for more information.
