Overview
The Chanute City Commission is the governing body of the community and functions similar to the board of directors of a large corporation. The commission is comprised of five members, including the mayor. Together, members enact laws and ordinances, establish policies and levels of service, adopt the budget, set the tax rate, and establishes fees for services. Each one has voting authority.

Mayor
The mayor presides at all commission meetings and is considered the official representative of the city.

Elections
Elections for City Commission are held every other year. In each election, three seats are vacant on the City Commission. The two candidates acquiring the most votes receive a four-year term, while the candidate obtaining the third most votes secures a two-year term. The mayor is elected yearly by the City Council.

Contact Commission Members
Citizens may communicate with City Commission members by phone, letters, or email. For member contact information and biographies, see the Members page. Citizens may also formally address the commission during public hearings or during public comment at regular City Commission meetings.
