Chanute. Enjoy
a challenging corn maze, nature trail hike, farm animals,
hayrack rides, labyrinth, flower maze, camping, fishing,
antique farm equipment, family gathering and local gifts and
produce sold in the comfort of an air conditioned barn.

Unique for a small town the Chanute Art Gallery
houses a Permanent Core Collection of over 500 works of art.
Special exhibits change every month.
Collections include:
The Luigi Kasimir Etchings, European and Oriental
Art, The Kansas Prairie Printmakers, Local and Area Artists.

and Historic Homes Tours
Both the downtown and historic homes
districts offer a variety of architectural styles and
beautiful examples of restoration.
Brochures for self-guided tours of both areas are
available. The historic homes tours takes you down broad
tree lined brick streets which make you feel you have
stepped back into another era.

All directions from Main and Lincoln
Nestled in the heart of downtown are a
variety of retail shops offering a wide range of goods and
services. A
number of places to eat offer everything from a charming
soda fountain and coffee shops to full meals including
ethnic food. Clothing,
gift, jewelry, furniture and even an old fashion hardware
store are available to satisfy your shopping needs.
Flea
Markets and Antique Stores
A number of shops offer a variety of rare
finds. Most of
the shops are located in or near downtown; one is located on
39 Highway east of town.

& Osa Johnson Safari Museum ®

Award winning exhibits and programs
highlight the achievements of Martin and Osa Johnson,
pioneering documentary filmmakers, photographers, authors,
explorers and Kansans.
Relive the Johnsons’ 1917-1936 adventures in
Africa, Borneo and the South Seas.
Additional exhibits feature the rich cultures and art
of Africa and changing themes.

Tours are available Monday thru Friday.
The Hitchhiker/Snowbird tour is at 9:45 am at the
factory in the Industrial Park just south of 35th
Parkway. The HitchHiker II tours are at 1:30 pm west of
Plummer on 14th Street.
Parks
Santa Fe Park/Santa Fe Safari Campground. The Santa Fe Safari Campground
has 30 pull-thru concrete
sites with full service hookups and a
dump station near by. There are 14 sites
adjacent to the Safari Golf Course and 16 sites near the intersection of 35th
and Santa Fe. Availability is on a
first come first served basis. Fees: no charge for the first
48 hours, then $3.00 per day.
Santa Fe Park (27th and South
Santa Fe). The
largest park in Chanute contains 6 ball diamonds (3 youth, 1
baseball & 2 adult), horseshoes, sand volleyball court,
playground equipment, fishing, boating and picnic areas and
shelters. A
3.ll mile hike/bike path leads to the Airport.
Of interest historical interest are the Austin Bridge
and 762 Steam Engine.
Central Park (Second and Forest).
Playground equipment for all ages, horseshoes,
picnic area and the Central Park Pavilion provide
entertainment.
Katy Park (Main and Katy).
A large swimming pool, baseball stadium, basketball
court, handball court, tennis court, shelter house/ picnic
area, and a soon to be constructed skate park provide fun
and relaxation under large shade trees.
Highland Park (Chestnut and Kansas).
Shelter houses, picnic areas, fountain area,
playground and tennis courts provide a relaxing fun park
just a block from KS 39.
North Malcolm (402 N. Malcolm).
A community center and playground equipment are
features of this site.
Santa Fe
Depot
111 North Lincoln, open 10-5 Monday through
Saturday Sunday 1-4. Closed major holidays.
Built in 1902-03 this building is on the
National Register of Historic Places.
The large depot was for many years the Southern
Division Headquarters for the Santa Fe Railroad.
A large Harvey House Restaurant, Wells Fargo Express
office and reading room were among the many services
provided to passengers and staff.
The area adjacent to the depot has been developed
into a plaza area featuring a gazebo, hike/bike path and a
small collection of rail stock.
Summit
Hill Gardens
Open by appointments call 620-839-5741.
A blend of art and historic preservation,
Summit Hill Gardens offers a step back in history. The first
school in Neosho County Summit Hill was restored and a
historic home and a modern structure were added to create a
one-of-a-kind home. Available
for sale are a wide variety of beautiful handcrafted soaps.
The flower and herb gardens are breathtaking.
