It
is my privilege as the Mayor of Chanute to extend a warm
welcome to the visitors and residents of the City of
Chanute, the hub of Southeast Kansas!
We hope you enjoy our website, and encourage you
to take advantage of all the amenities that the website
and the City of Chanute have to offer.
The
City of Chanute is one of only seven full-service cities
throughout the entire State of Kansas, offering
municipal gas, water, wastewater and electric utilities.
Chartered in 1873, the City was incorporated
after Octave Chanute brokered a compromise between four
townships that in effect merged the townships into one
city. Octave’s
illustrious career spanned every aspect of the
engineering profession.
After designing the Union Stockyards in Kansas
City and Chicago and the elevated railway network for
New York City and Manhattan Island, he turned his
attention towards the aviation business.
His two-winged glider served as an important
design piece for the Wright brothers' early success.
Chanute’s
population of 9,411 is composed of some of the most
caring and friendly individuals in America’s
heartland. Whether
you’re enjoying the local artistry at the annual
Artist Alley Festival or taking an African safari at the
award winning Martin Osa Johnson Safari Museum, you’re
always likely to find a smiling face.
Other attractions that might draw you to our
quaint community include the Chanute Art Gallery, Main
Street shops and galleries, or our excellent network of
parks including Santa Fe Lake and the Safari Municipal
Golf Course.
The historic Memorial Building houses the City’s
offices and the majestic Memorial Auditorium.
With a seating capacity of nearly 1,200, the
auditorium attracts local community theatre performances
as well as a variety of traveling shows and lecturers.
Our
website has been designed to facilitate public
interaction and information sharing with visitors to the
site. Internet
users will be able to find information pertaining to the
COMMUNITY,
GOVERNMENT,
BUSINESS
OPPORTUNITIES, and
VISITING ATTRACTIONS of Chanute.
Whether you're looking for electric utility
information or our various economic development
strategies and incentives, our website should provide a
bountiful amount of useful information.
Therefore, enjoy the website and don’t hesitate
to visit our local attractions, parks, and various other
recreational or cultural activities.
Welcome to Chanute!
Mayor Ed Cox
