Mission Statement
Officers
shall preserve the peace, protect life and property, prevent crime,
apprehend criminals, recover lost or stolen property, and enforce in a
fair and impartial manner the Ordinances of the City of Chanute and the
Statutes of the State of Kansas.
Officers
shall serve the public by direction, counsel and in other ways that do not
interfere with the discharge of their police responsibilities.
They shall respect and protect the rights of individuals and
perform their service with honesty, zeal, courage, fidelity, and sound
judgment.
Officers,
in accomplishing their mission, shall recognize that the power of the
Police to fulfill their functions and duties is dependent upon the public
approval of their existence, actions, behavior, and on their ability to
secure and maintain public respect. To
secure and maintain the respect and approval of the public also means
obtaining the willing cooperation of the public in the task of securing
observations of the laws. The
extent to which the cooperation of the public can be secured diminishes
proportionately the use of physical force in achieving police objectives.
The test of Police efficiency is
the absence of crime and disorder, not the visible evidence of Police
action in dealing with them.
